The small cemetery at this site commemorates the Trail of Tears—the forced removal and march of the Cherokee people from their homelands in the southeastern United States to Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma) in 1838 – 1839. Designated a national historic trail, the Trail of Tears crossed the Ohio River at Golconda. Today the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail auto route enters Illinois at Cave-In-Rock.
